Zayn Malik is making waves with his new track Fuchsia Sea, and fans think he’s finally opening up about his experience with racism during his One Direction days.
On Saturday, Zayn dropped a teaser for the song on Instagram, where he spits some pretty heavy bars. One line in particular is grabbing attention among Directioners:
“I worked hard in a white band, and they still laughed at the Asian.”
Oof. That line hit hard, and fans are convinced it’s a direct reference to how he was treated as the only non-white member of 1D.
“Cause i worked hard in a white band. And they still laughed at the asian” OKAY ZAYN?? speak your truth baby pic.twitter.com/YbzBnbVNWP

Zayn hasn’t dropped the full song yet, but confirmed it’s “coming soon.” And yeah, fans are already losing it.
“OKAY ZAYN?? speak your truth baby,” one person wrote on X. Another commented on the IG post, writing, “I’m listening, love to hear what you’ve to say!” A third simply declared: “OMG the return of the king.”
i'm soo proud of zayn for publicly acknowledging the racism/islamophobia he's faced specifically from what must've been an extremely isolating experience as the ONLY poc in a white band full of unsupportive bandmates who never defended him

Some fans let everyone know what kind of racism Zayn was experiencing as part of 1D, giving examples of some the online hate he faced (and still faces):
Zayn was literally branded a ter*orist at 17. He twted a simple Arabic prayer & got called a jihadi. He posted “Eid Mubarak” & white fans told him to stop pushing Islam. He was constantly exoticized only praised when he looked “less brown,” mocked when he looked “too Muslim.”… https://t.co/hQKOoofUTU

Zayn and Harry Fans Go to War
You know the fandom drama couldn’t stay quiet for long. Fans are already in full-on stan war mode on X. While most people are are praising Zayn for being real, others (aka Harries) are throwing shade at him, and supporting their fave Harry Styles, instead. It makes a whole lotta NO SENSE, but this is stan Twitter for ya.
The reality was this: everyone screaming the name of the star harry styles that carried the band and was the protagonist although it hurts Zayn’s 5 fans pic.twitter.com/rYetLFbjsB https://t.co/Xq5grzGWQF

one day we have to talk about why harry styles fans feel brave enough to target such racism at zayn even in 2025… this account has 4k followers btw pic.twitter.com/1nYNIE7XqD

some ppl r just disgusting. trying to minimize zayn’s experience to make it about their fave? the fact that this person hosted a space with “k*ll Zayn” as the title. wtf? how twisted and vile do u have to be to wish death on someone just for sharing their truth? i'm disgusted pic.twitter.com/VPAmDWrFrq

Zayn, now 32, has always been private—but when he talks, it’s real. Born to a Pakistani dad and an English-Irish mom, he’s never shied away from his roots. But this might be the first time he’s spoken so candidly about his time in One Direction through his music.
The rest of the lyrics are just as deep, with fans interpreting this particular line as a reference to the Palestine and Israel conflict:
“They left a blue mark on a white flag. Then used blood for the painting.”
No official comments from Zayn’s reps yet, but fans are reading between the lines like never before. What’s your take on this? Let me know in the comments.
