The Sombr TikTok Drama Controversy Explained

Does Sombr really know his target audience?
sombr controversy explained

We all thought we were leaving celebrity confrontations behind. This recent controversy began when a fan bluntly criticized a concert by Sombr, the moniker of Shane Michael Boose and one of today’s most-talked-about pop-rock artists, ultimately catching the singer’s attention. He took the criticism so bad, that he felt the need to respond, counter the remarks, and defend his show.

This 20-year-old singer is known for hits such as back to friends and his latest single, Homewrecker, both of which have gained massive success thanks to his loyal fanbase, largely made up of tweens. His music generally explores heartbreak, failed romance, and relationships, with listeners quickly falling for his storytelling. Listen to i don’t know you anymore and you’ll get it.

But apart from all his success, it’s the controversy that still lingers online—and one that the internet won’t forget anytime soon. Many people were left completely let down by what they saw at some of his performances. So, in case you need a recap, here’s what happened and why Sombr’s concert drama became a TikTok trend where users began mocking the 12 to 12 artist.

Concert attendee gave an honest review of Sombr’s show

TikTok user Meganator__ shared that it was the “worst concert” she’d ever attended, largely because of the influx of kids, which she described as feeling like a “middle school dance.”

Things started going downhill for Meg when Sombr began making brainrot jokes, including references to the popular “6-7” meme. There was also the “Sombr dating show,” which she found embarrassing, as fans were invited on stage to call their exes toxic. I mean, does he actually know his target audience?

According to Meg, things went even further when he joked about getting his d*ck sucked and asked fans to bark for him because he’s a “daddy.”

idk what i expected but it was certainly not that

Yeah… that’s a bit much. Is this really something you put in front of an audience largely made up of 13- to 16-year-olds? The experience eventually prompted Meg to leave the concert altogether.

Just imagine what some parents felt. They definitely had an “Oh jeez!” moment.

Sombr responded to the criticism with a rant

After the concertgoer’s video went viral, Sombr responded in an attempt to clear things up. But for me, it didn’t come across as a sincere apology. Instead, it felt more like he wanted to push back against the criticism.

It’s as though he was rallying fans to join him against the backlash, especially when he called out Meg for comparing him to Slender Man because of his slim build.

“And also she was body shaming me,” Sombr said. He also continued making brainrot jokes while addressing the controversy, saying that his real fans know he’s always making funny jokes online and that they should expect that kind of humor from him. But it felt like bro forgot what his audience actually looked like during those shows.

Everyone said Sombr didn’t address the real problem

What’s the problem, you may ask? Those sexual jokes.

While many of his underage fans enjoyed the performance, others were left horrified that the biggest concerns were seemingly being ignored.

“As someone who genuinely likes his music, he did not address the actual concerns,” one Reddit user said.

“The “freshly 20” argument in his response vid almost feels like it was a way for him to indirectly justify his underage fans barking for him…he certainly didn’t want to directly address the most controversial parts of her video (Meg) like a big boy so i don’t get why his fans were glazing the response so hard,” another person wrote.

“Yeah, you’re right, he glossed over everything in a very PR way,” another Reddit user added. One commenter also said, “He needs to make a mature response and reevaluate his shows.”

Are boundaries between the artist and fan necessary?

Absolutely. Admit it or not, we often get attached to celebrities who have had a big impact on our lives. That’s the case with Sombr and his fans, especially when serious concerns end up being overshadowed.

This also ties into how some fans get swept up in the moment when he’s making unnecessary jokes. The spotlight Sombr has can be influential, and some fans may go along with whatever he says, even when it’s not appropriate for a younger audience. It almost feels as though “age-appropriate” is no longer part of the conversation.

It’s a little suspicious that someone who seems to understand his supporters so well still struggled to address their concerns directly. If he can understand his audience enough to shape his performances around them, how did he miss the main issue people were raising?

The TikTok trend surrounding the Sombr discourse

The internet wasn’t convinced, and suddenly my FYP was blowing up with TikTok videos about the controversy.

The takes were witty, sarcastic, and sometimes brutal. The jokes kept evolving and became increasingly creative through pop culture references. Some examples include:

However, a handful of commenters defended Sombr, questioning why he’s receiving so much criticism. They may be missing the point, but the best way to settle the discussion is by focusing on the performances themselves and the sexual jokes that many people, especially younger audience members, felt were inappropriate.

Sure, he’s only 20 years old, and he has plenty of time to grow. Hopefully, as he gets older, he’ll learn from the criticism people are raising now. That way, he can continue creating the kind of soothing, life-changing concerts that fans connected with in the first place.
