Celebrity breakups can look deceptively simple. One minute they’re posting anniversary pics on the Gram, the next they share a Notes app statement saying they’re “going their separate ways” and somehow already look totally fine.
But getting legally divorced? That’s a whole different story.
And if you’ve ever watched your own parents, family members or someone close to you go through a divorce, you probably know there’s a LOT more to it than simply signing some papers and moving on.
When a couple has kids, multiple homes, businesses, investments or a LOT of money to divide, the breakup can be the easy part. The paperwork is where things can get seriously complicated.
From Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s eight-year saga to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver’s decade-long wait, these celebrity divorces prove that saying “it’s over” and actually making it official are two very different things.
The Longest Celebrity Divorces Ever
1. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie — 8 years
Filed: September 2016
Settlement: December 2024
Approx. timeline: 8 years

If celebrity divorces had a “please just finish already” award, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would probably win. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016, and the pair finally reached a settlement in December 2024. Yeah, eight years later.
So why did it take SO long? There were children, custody issues, multiple properties and their shared French winery, Château Miraval, all tangled up in the wider legal battle. They were actually declared legally single in 2019, but their other disputes continued for years. Basically, the marriage was over long before the paperwork drama was.
The takeaway: You can be legally single and still have a LOT left to sort out.
2. Arnold Schwarzenegger & Maria Shriver — 10 years
Filed: July 2011
Finalized: December 2021
Approx. timeline: 10 years’

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver announced their separation in 2011, with Shriver filing for divorce that July. And then… nothing happened quickly. Their divorce wasn’t finalized until December 2021, making it roughly a decade-long process.
The interesting part? This wasn’t necessarily ten years of screaming matches in court. The former couple continued co-parenting their four children and maintained a relationship as a family. Their enormous financial picture also made things more complicated, and parts of the process were handled privately.
So yes, a divorce can take forever without the couple publicly fighting every five seconds.
3. Halle Berry & Olivier Martinez — 8 years
Filed: October 2015
Finalized/settled: 2023
Approx. timeline: 8 years

Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez were married for just two years, but their divorce took about eight years to fully sort out. They filed in October 2015 and reached a settlement in 2023.
A huge part of the story was their son, Maceo. The eventual agreement covered joint legal and physical custody, schooling, healthcare and child support. Berry was ordered to pay Martinez $8,000 a month in child support, plus an additional percentage of certain income.
And this is a good reminder that divorce isn’t just about deciding whether you’re still married. There can be years of figuring out what happens with the kids, the money and the practical stuff afterward.
4. Lisa Marie Presley & Michael Lockwood — nearly 5 years
Filed: June 2016
Legally divorced: May 2021
Approx. timeline: nearly 5 years

Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Lockwood married in 2006 and separated a decade later, with Presley filing for divorce in 2016. They were finally declared legally divorced in May 2021, almost five years after the case began.
But here’s the thing: even though they were legally single, their financial and other court issues weren’t completely finished. Those included child support, financial disclosures and disputes over property and legal fees.
So this is another example of something people don’t always realize: the divorce being finalized doesn’t necessarily mean every single issue between two exes has magically disappeared. The legal status can be done while the financial cleanup keeps going.
5. Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck — more than 3 years
Separated: 2015
Filed: April 2017
Finalized: October/November 2018
Approx. timeline from separation: 3 years

Former power couple Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck announced their separation in 2015, but they didn’t actually file for divorce until 2017. They were officially divorced in 2018, more than three years after announcing the split.
You can say theirs is a good example of the opposite of a giant public divorce war. They were focused on co-parenting their three children and reportedly took their time getting everything in order.
When they were finally ready to finish things, Garner requested a private judge to speed up the final process. They agreed on custody and the remaining details were handled privately.
So sometimes a long divorce doesn’t mean a messy divorce. It can just mean everyone is taking their time to get the details right…before running back to your ex (Ben, J.Lo, we’re looking at you!).
6. Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony — nearly 3 years
Separated: July 2011
Filed: April 2012
Finalized: June 2014
Approx. timeline: nearly 3 years

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony announced their split in 2011, but their divorce wasn’t finalized until June 2014. Anthony filed in April 2012, meaning the whole process took almost three years from their separation.
They had twins together, so custody and child-related arrangements were obviously part of the equation. Their final agreement gave them joint legal custody, with the children spending most of their time with Lopez. They also agreed that neither child nor spousal support would be required.
It’s a good example of why children can make the practical side of divorce much more complicated. Because you’re not just asking, “Who gets what?” You’re also asking, “How are we going to raise these kids now that we’re not married?”
7. Heidi Klum & Seal — more than 2 years
Separated: January 2012
Filed: April 2012
Finalized: October 2014
Approx. timeline: more than 2 years

Heidi Klum and Seal announced their separation in January 2012, and Klum filed for divorce a few months later. Their divorce was finally finalized in October 2014 — more than two years after the split.
They had four children between them, so custody was obviously one of the things that needed to be sorted out. Interestingly, the divorce judgment itself didn’t publicly spell out all the details of how their assets and custody arrangements were divided.
Reports at the time said the pair had also reached a property settlement and had no spousal support arrangement.
8. Paul McCartney & Heather Mills — about 2 years
Separated: 2006
Divorce finalized: May 2008
Approx. timeline: 2 years

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills split in 2006, and their divorce became one of the most publicly dissected celebrity breakups of the era. Their marriage was formally ended in May 2008, after roughly two years apart.
The money was obviously a major part of the story. McCartney’s fortune was enormous, and Mills was ultimately awarded a multimillion-pound settlement after the couple failed to agree on finances themselves.
This is basically the classic example of what happens when “let’s just sort this out between ourselves” doesn’t quite work.
9. Bruce Willis & Demi Moore — about 2 years
Separated: June 1998
Filed: October 2000
Finalized: October 2000
Approx. timeline: 2 years from separation

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore announced their separation in 1998, but they didn’t actually file for divorce until October 2000. Once they filed, however, the divorce itself was finalized almost immediately.
So why include them in our list about long divorces? Because they show just how different separation and divorce can be.
The couple spent those two years apart while sorting out their future, including their three daughters and a sizeable property portfolio. When they finally filed, the legal ending happened very quickly. Basically, they did a lot of the waiting before filing.
10. Christie Brinkley & Peter Cook — about 2 years
Filed: September 2006
Finalized: October 2008
Approx. timeline: 2 years
Christie Brinkley and architect Peter Cook’s divorce was anything but quiet. Brinkley filed in September 2006 after allegations surrounding Cook’s affair with an 18-year-old employee became public.
The case dragged on for about two years and involved custody and property disputes before the couple reached an out-of-court settlement in July 2008. Brinkley kept 18 properties in the Hamptons, while Cook received $2.1 million and parenting time with their children.
The divorce officially became final that October. Yeah, basically the nightmare version of “we’ll figure it out later.”
So, why do celebrity divorces take so long?
Well, it’s not always as simple as “they hate each other.”
Once a marriage ends, there’s a whole list of boring-but-important things to figure out: Who gets the house? What happens to the savings and investments? What about businesses, bills, maintenance payments… and, of course, the kids?
In England and Wales, couples can agree on a lot of these things themselves rather than leaving everything for a court to decide. And when both sides can actually agree, it can make the whole process a lot less painful (and potentially a lot quicker).
That’s where a separation agreement can come in. Basically, it’s a way for separating couples to put the important stuff down on paper, from money and property to arrangements for the kids. So everyone knows what they’re agreeing to.
And if you’re now thinking, OK, but how does divorce actually work? GOV.UK’s divorce guide breaks down the process. You can also check out GOV.UK’s guide to money and property after a breakup for the financial side of things.
Basically, breaking up is emotional. Getting divorced is paperwork. And when you’re dealing with celebrity-level money, multiple houses, businesses and kids? Yeah… that paperwork can take a while.
