Olivia Rodrigo really cannot wear anything these days without haters turning it into a full-blown discourse topic.
This time, it was the pink floral babydoll dress she wore during her Spotify Billions Club Live performance in Barcelona… and wow, the timeline has been blowing up.
The 23-year-old singer hit the stage in a super short pastel pink dress with puff sleeves, tiny floral details, and chunky black Dr. Martens boots to toughen up the whole look. Very Olivia, very messy-girl-rockstar-meets-vintage-doll aesthetic.

But after clips of her performance started circulating online — especially one where she was kneeling and moving dramatically during the set — social media immediately split into two camps.
One side thought the look was cute, campy, and very inspired by vintage fashion. The other side was calling Olivia out for dressing like a toddler.

Olivia Rodrigo’s Dress Starts “Sexy Baby” Discourse
Some viewers were uncomfortable with the dress, saying it played into what they called the “sexy baby” aesthetic that’s been floating around pop culture lately.
We have to talk about the weird trend of heavily sexualised pop stars dressing themselves as little girls 👇 pic.twitter.com/iF6kRuyZ1D

One person wrote that they wanted “white girls to explain their newfound sexy baby obsession,” while another said Olivia wearing what they called “children’s clothes” was giving them “the ick.”
i’d love for the white girls to explain their newfound sexy baby obsession https://t.co/HUQlX4dPTZ

Others argued that there’s been a growing trend of female pop stars (aka Sabrina Carpenter) styling themselves in ways they feel blur the line between childlike fashion and adult sexuality.
The reactions got intense fast, with Livies and Carpenters even starting a comparison war.

But Fans Are Defending Olivia’s Dresses
Meanwhile, Olivia’s fans were immediately defending the outfit (shoutout to all the Livies!) and they kind of had receipts.
A lot of people pointed out that the dress wasn’t some random “little girl” look — it fits directly into the vintage-inspired aesthetic Olivia has been wearing for months now.
If you’ve been paying attention to her fashion era lately, she’s been leaning heavily into 70s-inspired babydoll silhouettes, lace trims, mini dresses, and grungy feminine styling. Think vintage Miu Miu mixed with messy rock-band girlfriend energy.
olivia rodrigo’s style has been the same since 2023. there’s only this “baby clothes” discourse now cause she’s wearing pinks instead of darker colors pic.twitter.com/6zxr52Caic

Olivia Rodrigo since 2021. Btw, sabrina copied this yellow/black dress years later.

Instead of accusing Olivia of wearing something she’s been years for eyes, try to do something about the viral hate tweets accusing Sabrina of being the xenophobic white girl she is💕 https://t.co/jbbTcQGgxV pic.twitter.com/ltTk37YHXT
Fans also connected the look to Courtney Love’s famous “kinderwhore” aesthetic from the 90s: a deliberately chaotic style that mixed baby doll dresses with smeared eyeliner, combat boots, and punk attitude.

And honestly, the giant boots completely changed the vibe of Olivia’s outfit. Without them, maybe it would’ve read softer or sweeter. But with the Docs? It looked way more grungey alt-girl than “childlike.”
People also pointed out that Olivia has been wearing similar silhouettes since early 2026, including custom runway-inspired pieces from brands like Rodarte and Miu Miu. So this wasn’t some shocking random pivot.

This is literally just her aesthetic right now.
What is the History of Olivia’s Babydoll Dress, Anyway?
Here’s the part a lot of people online seemed to forget: babydoll dresses were never originally children’s clothing in the first place.
The babydoll style actually dates back to the 1940s, when designer Sylvia Pedlar created the silhouette during wartime fabric shortages.
It was designed as lingerie for adult women — not kids.
The style became popular because it used less fabric while still emphasizing an adult silhouette through low necklines, sheer fabrics, fitted busts, and flirtier cuts. Basically, it was meant to feel feminine and sexy, not childlike.
In clothing designed by and for adults, the babydoll was created in the 1940s by designer Sylvia Pedlar as a practical solution to save fabric during wartime. It has always been a form of women’s lingerie intended to accentuate the adult silhouette, using necklines, sheer… pic.twitter.com/NabGikdXlx

So despite the confusing name, fashion historians have long considered the babydoll an adult garment rooted in lingerie and vintage fashion history.
Which makes this whole discourse kind of fascinating because people are reacting more to the name and styling associations than the actual history of the clothing itself.
At this point, Olivia’s entire style evolution has just become one of those “you get it or you don’t” situations. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
