It sure looks like Benson’s fame is moving up, so if you, too, are intrigued by this artist (and his very awesome mustache), we’ve concocted 10 fun Benson Boone facts so you can get to know him better…

Benson Boone Facts All Fans Should Know

1. Benson had No Plans to be a Singer

While most singers seem to be born with a mic in hand, Boone actually discovered his love for singing pretty late—during his senior year of high school. It all started when a friend convinced him to join a battle of the bands at school and he realized he could sing.

“I don’t know how I didn’t know that I could sing!” he said. “Like, I think about it all the time. My parents didn’t even know. No one knew. But now it’s like, right away, it seemed such a big part of me that I don’t know what I was thinking, like, years before that. I don’t know where it came from,” he told ABC Audio.

Before that? He had zero plans to be a singer, especially since his family had no musical background. He actually wanted to get into sports. Turns out, he ended up becoming a Grammy-nominated superstar!

2. He Withdrew from American Idol

Yep, you read that right—Benson was one of the fan faves on American Idol in 2021, and Katy Perry, who was a judge at the time, even predicted that he could win. But the then-18-year-old ended up choosing to leave the show so that he could build his own career in music.

“It was a very hard choice [to leave Idol],” Boone said in a statement at the time. “I didn’t really know who I wanted to be as an artist yet, and I didn’t want to show the world someone I’m not. … I want people to see that I take music seriously.”

Benson later took to TikTok to share snippets of his own songs, gained 1.7 million followers, and was eventually signed. Totally respect that!

Why did Benson Boone quit American Idol?

Benson quit American Idol because he didn’t “want people to be like, ‘Oh, Benson Boone. American Idol blew him up. That’s where he comes from.’ No. I want to be Benson Boone because I write smash hits and they love my music. That’s why I quit. I just didn’t want that label on me.”

3. He is Signed to Imagine Dragons’ Label

If you thought Benson’s music was giving Imagine Dragons, you’re not imagining things (pun intended). In 2021, after his TikTok videos blew up, he caught the attention of Dan Reynolds, the lead singer of Imagine Dragons. Dan was so impressed that he signed Benson to his label, Night Street Records, and became his mentor.

Does Benson Boone write his own songs?

4. Benson Was Almost an Architect

Believe it or not, Boone was on his way to becoming an architect before diving into music. In 2020, he enrolled in Brigham Young University to study architecture and interior design—but after just one semester, he dropped out to chase his music dreams.

In an interview with Warner Music, he explained: “I’m an artist musically, but I’m an artist, like, an artist artist. So, I kinda wanted to do that route of things, where I’d be designing houses or cool buildings and then also designing the interior, ‘cause I just love doing that.”
