Wake up babe, Selena Gomez just dropped new music! After teasing us for a while, the popular star surprised everyone this Friday (yes, on Valentine’s Day, because duh), with her latest track, Scared of Loving You, featuring none other than her fiancé (and producer, obviously) Benny Blanco.
The singer-turned-actress also announced that her joint album with Benny, I Said I Love You First, would be dropping on March 21, and judging by the title and Instagram visuals, we’re in for a super romantic ride.
Even the first song off the upcoming collaborative album is cram-full of mushy lyrics (not complaining). In Scared of Loving You, Selena croons about her latest love (which is honestly sweet)…and among other things—her ex-boyfriends…well kinda.

Selena’s Relationship Anxiety Revealed Through her Lyrics
Scared of Loving You is a literal love letter to her fiancé, but it also feels like an insightful look at Selena’s romantic anxieties.
The singer spills her heart out, saying she’s not afraid of loving Benny—but of losing him. She wonders if he’ll stick around even when things get tough:
“If I broke your heart, would you take me back? / If I broke my arm, would you sign my cast?”
Selena also sings, “I’m not scared of anyone or dying young, or if you’re gonna find somebody new,” hinting at both jealousy issues, her battle with lupus, and her worries of being replaced.
And here’s where things get juicy. Selena literally throws in a subtle nod to her past lovers—not in a full-on Thank U, Next way, but more in a self-reflective kinda way:
“When I was young I would love too fast / Hope I don’t repeat my past”
Mic drop! Justin Bieber, we’re looking at you!
She also references having to deal with fake news and relentless media scrutiny throughout her past relationships:
“If I throw a fit and get photographed / Would you take my side? Would you hold my hand? / If they sell a lie, don’t let ’em send me back”
Who is Selena Referring to in Her New Song?

Selena’s dating history goes back years, so she could be alluding to any guy at this rate. Her first serious relationship was with Nick Jonas back in 2008, when she was just 16. The reason for their split? They both had crazy busy schedules.
Then came Taylor Lautner in 2009, but their rising careers and intense media pressure made things complicated, leading to a mutual breakup.
But let’s be real—Justin Bieber is the ex Selena must be referring to here (and honestly, the one that probably left her with the most scars). From 2010 to 2018, it was an on-again, off-again rollercoaster full of drama (including Hailey Bieber), trust issues, and way too many headlines.
Let’s not forget Selena also dated The Weeknd, whom she broke up with because of conflicting schedules…
Each heartbreak triggered different trauma for Selena, so no wonder her new relationship has her riddled with anxiety. But despite her worries, I have a strong feeling Sel is confident and finally living the peaceful romance she’s always dreamed of.
Forget loving him like a love song, girlie is loving Benny like a whole love album!

Verse 1:
If I broke your heart, would you take me back?
If I broke my arm, would you sign my cast?
When I was young, I would love too fast
Hope I don’t repeat my past
Chorus:
‘Cause I’m not scared of lovin’ you
I’m just scared of losin’ you
I’m not scared of anyone or dying young
Or if you’re gonna find somebody new
‘Cause how could they love you
As much as I do?
As much as I do
Verse 2:
If I lose my shit, promise not to laugh
If I throw a fit and get photographed
Would you take my side? Would you hold my hand?
If they sell a lie, don’t let ’em send me back
Chorus:
‘Cause I’m not scared of lovin’ you
I’m just scared of losin’ you
I’m not scared of anyone or dying young
Or if you’re gonna find somebody new
‘Cause how could they love you
As much as I do?
As much as I do
